Why do pet lovers like pets? Trying to understand

Hello pet lovers, no offense to anybody, but I cannot figure out why is it that pet lovers like pets, I am trying to understand, cos my neighbour has a dog and it has a kind of smell to me which is not that pleasant to me. So I am here trying to understand, perhaps pet lovers can share with me their views. Thanks in advance.

people do have a common misunderstanding of dogs that smells,bites,bark and shed fur everywhere. owning a dog would mean a whole different thing. a dog would actually provide lots of fun and laughter that a kid in a house would. people would also exercise more by taking their dog for a walk especially elderly. medical research have also proven that a dog owner have a lower risk of medical problem. imagine coming home after work/school/meal with a dog waiting at your doorstep,wagging its tail and looking happily wanting to have a enjoyable owner & dog play. hope this helps.
